The Arts and Science Center hosts the Science and Engineering Institute at Pine Bluff. This event is free for all Arkansas students that are enrolled in the 6th to 10th grades.

Students attending the institute will have the following sessions:

The Spectre of Spectra How do we know what the stars and the Sun are made of? How do non lights work? How does a rainbow form? The colorful world of spectroscopy can answer all of these questions and many more. In this activity we will learn how to use a spectroscope, interpret the results, and make a portable spectroscope to take home with you. Please bring an empty regular-sized Pringles can to build your spectroscope.

The Enlightening World of Optics How do LED televisions and monitors work? How effective are sunglasses in protecting us from eye damage? Why is the sky blue? In this activity we will explore various aspects of Light and Color, such LEDs, lasers, polarization, color mixing, how we perceive colors, UV radiation, and anything else we can think of dealing with optics. Please bring your sunglasses, (in particular ones with polarized lenses, but any will be better than none) and be ready for an enlightening experience!
